I've earned my living as a successful not-for-profit and government administrator and have held senior-level positions with the March of Dimes, St. Vincent's Hospital and with The City of New York.
Along the way, I've worked as an advisor to several political candidates, including Mayor Giuliani who was elected mayor in 1993 after I helped him to increase his support among Hispanic voters by 6% over his previous (failed) bid for mayor.
I have chaired a couple of small, housing-oriented, not-for-profit organizations. I have served on several government commissions and hospital advisory boards throughout the years and am particularly proud of my work on behalf of New York's homeless and "hidden homeless" back in the early 90s.
I am now beginning my efforts to pursue a second career: that of high school history teacher as well as that of semi-professional photographer. While teaching is its own reward (it had better be) it also allows me to more fully pursue my love of photography.
The improvements to my life, and lifestyle, that have come as a result of changing careers and getting out of the "rat race" relatively young, has made it one of the best, and sanest, decisions I've ever made.
Some of the Things I Enjoy...
In addition to being a life-long photographer, I am also an avid audiophile, videophile, record collector, music aficionado and gadget-geek.
I love all sorts of music and, as a result, have over 3,000 LPs and 7,000 CDs. No small commitment when you live in a NYC one-bedroom apartment!
I have a very eclectic musical taste and listen mostly to Classic Rock, Pop & Soul from the Beatles/Motown era straight through to the U2/R.E.M./Nirvana era (including virtually all genres from that era). Sinatra is, of course, in a league all his own. Hmmm... someone who loves Sinatra, Armstrong, Dylan AND the Sex Pistols... very strange indeed!
I love Baroque and Classical Music, particularly Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and others from the Classical & Romantic periods. When it comes to Jazz, I enjoy Miles, Dizzy, Coltrane, Parker and all things Be-Bop as well as Armstrong and Ellington (of course).
As for movies, I am a sucker for big-action, big-budget, special-effects blockbusters. What can I say, I am a boy and a geek (no apologies). I also like historical dramas, psychological thrillers and screwball comedies. Of course, any crime drama featuring Joe Pesci cursing like a complete maniac combines the best of both worlds: high-comedy AND great drama! :)
When it comes to more "serious" films, I must admit that I rarely volunteer to go see one. HOWEVER, when a friend or date DRAG me to see a GOOD drama, arty or foreign film., I'm usually very grateful and leave the theater thinking: "Man, I'm such a nit. I really should see this kind of film more often."
As for television, I am mostly a fan of science, nature, history and news programming along with mindless ½ hour situation comedies. I've always been a news-junkie but am trying to kick that nasty habit. TIVO-style TV ROCKS! I've recently upgraded to High-def TV and am now watching High-Def TV proving, once again, that form trumps content.
...and what about art, literature, sports, politics, travel, food & wine, love, etc.? C'mon, this is just a photo-blog. I've already gone on long enough, besides... none of your business! :)
